Paul Robinson has tipped Xherdan Shaqiri to sign for Newcastle United if the attacker wishes to finish his career playing regular football.

The former Spurs and Leeds United goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 28-year-old has the chance to be "part of something special" at St. James' Park.

According to the Daily Mail, the Liverpool winger’s representatives have been contacted ahead of a potential move this summer, subject to a takeover being completed.

The Switzerland international was the subject of significant interest to multiple clubs in January but the Reds rebuffed any inquiries.

Robinson suggested the former Bayern Munich and Stoke City player may seek a new challenge if, as expected, Jurgen Klopp's side win the Premier League this season.

"He has done well at Liverpool," he told Football Insider.

"A bit-part player but he has put in performances over the past two years.

"It depends what the player wants. It looks like he is going to win the Premier League title this year and he may want to finish his career by playing football week in, week out.

"There is an opportunity for a new challenge at Newcastle and if the takeover does happen it will be an opportunity to be part of something special there."

Shaqiri still has three years remaining on his contract at Anfield after he put pen to paper on a five-year deal when he arrived for £13million in the summer 2018.

Newcastle will have concerns over the player's fitness with the Swiss winger limited to just 10 appearances this season because of injury and has not featured since 11 January.
