Nigel Pearson will be interviewed by Fulham this week and could be appointed in time for their next match, Football Insider sources understand.
The former Leicester manager is the west London club's first choice to replace Kit Symons, who was sacked eight days ago.
He is set to meet with Fulham chiefs and be given the opportunity to provide his vision for leading the Championship club back into the Premier League.
Pearson has also been linked with the vacant manager's position at QPR, where Neil Warnock is in interim charge, but is said to be more keen on Fulham.
The 52-year-old former Hull and Southampton manager has been out of work since being dismissed by Leicester in July despite overseeing a remarkable turnaround that maintained the club's Premier League status last season.
Fulham are keen to have a new manager in place before their trip to MK Dons on Saturday.
Symons was dismissed following Fulham's defeat to Birmingham before the international break, which left the Cottagers 12th in the Championship table, eight points off the play-off places.
Chairman Shahid Khan said he wanted to take the west London club "to a higher level of success" as they seek a return to the Premier League following relegation in 2014.
