Exclusive: Paul Robinson claims Newcastle now in danger of losing star to West Brom

Paul Robinson insisted Dwight Gayle will "not be happy" with a role on the bench at Newcastle United and tipped West Brom to resign the striker.

The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested the 29-year-old will be subject to interest from a host of clubs when the transfer window reopens.

Gayle has been limited to just 12 appearances this season, predominantly as a substitute, after struggling with calf and hamstring injuries.

The English striker spent the 2018/19 campaign on loan at Championship side West Brom where he scored an impressive 24 goals in 41 appearances.

Robinson believes the Baggies will jump at the chance to resign the goalscorer if he seeks an exit from St. James Park.

"If he is struggling to get in the Newcastle team Dwight Gayle will be attracting interest from a lot of places," the ex-Spurs player told Football Insider.

"Obviously he did well there, enjoyed it and score a lot of goals whilst he was on loan. If there was an option to take him back they may look at that. West Brom, like Leeds, are light in that department.

"Gayle will not be happy sat on the bench not playing and West Brom are a potential suitor regardless of whether they are in the Premier League."

United's striker issues have been well documented this season with Joelinton failing to meet expectations following his club-record £40million arrival from Hoffenheim.

Gayle will hope he is given more game time when or if the season resumes with all fixtures currently suspended due to the pandemic - COVID-19.
