Exclusive: Paul Robinson thrilled by reported West Ham pursuit - 'They would need him'

Paul Robinson suggested West Ham would be wise to sign Chelsea attacker Olivier Giroud as they need a player like him.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Laura O'Leary, the ex Tottenham keeper shared that he believes Giroud may be available to purchase in January but admitted you can't be too sure what the plan is for him at Chelsea.

It was recently reported that new Hammers manager David Moyes had made the Blues forward his top target with the club ready to back him.

Robinson explained that the Hammers could do with a proven player of Giroud's ilk before ripping into ex-Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini for how he failed to improve the club during his reign.

When asked if Giroud would be an inspired January signing as he'll likely be available, Robinson told Football Insider: "Well it looks like he will be available at the moment, you can't know the plan for sure.

"But someone of that ilk, they would need him, he is a proven player.

"The previous manager has spent millions and millions of pounds and they're still no better off then went he went in.

"They've spent a ridiculous amount on wages on players, managers and transfer fees so they're worse off than when he came in.

"So David Moyes has a big job on his hands, but Giroud would be a good signing."

The 33-year-old French forward has featured just seven times this season, though he did manage to score a goal in the Super Cup final against Liverpool in August.

Giroud is only contracted to stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of the season after signing a short contract extension in May 2019.
