West Bromwich Albion are closing in on the signing of former Norwich City and Rangers defender Russell Martin after taking him on trial, Football Insider sources understands.

Martin is a free agent after having his contract terminated by mutual consent on transfer deadline day at the end of August.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the Midlands club are in pole position to sign Martin in the coming days amid interest from a number of rival clubs.

The 32-year-old spent nine years at Norwich and made 309 appearances for the club during his time at Carrow Road.

The Scotland international spent the second half of last season on loan at Rangers, making 17 appearances during his time at Ibrox.

Martin's versatility in that he can play at right-back and centre-back appeals to West Brom boss Darren Moore as he looks to strengthen his squad options.

If Martin impresses during his training stint at West Brom he could win a short-term deal at the Hawthorns that runs until the end of the season.
