Expert brands SPFL a 'laughing stock' as Celtic and Rangers hit by new 'farce'

The SPFL have been branded a "laughing stock" after a major decision which is set to impact Rangers and Celtic.

That's according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the implementation of VAR in Scotland.

As per Sky Sports (19 April), 41 of 42 SPFL clubs voted to introduce the technology – which is expected to cost £1.2million per season.

However, VAR will only be introduced halfway through the season, while there is a break for the 2022 World Cup.

McAvennie can't believe the technology won't be brought in at the start of the season.

"I don't get that, just put it in this summer. You can't bring it in halfway through," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"I don't like VAR but I think it can work with competent officials. It needs to be done differently.

"One issue is, you need an ex-player there to help make the decision. That isn't going to happen.

"It's going to be a farce. I think it will cause more problems up here. People will talk about decisions that were chalked off at the start of the season.

"I think it will be hell to pay. Why is Scottish football always a laughing stock?

"We have it now, bring it in now. Why do they always do things like this?

"I don't understand their thinking, you can't do it halfway through a season."

Celtic are currently six points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

Rangers next face Motherwell on Saturday (23 April) before the Hoops take on Ross County 24 hours later.
