It will be a "miracle" if Diego Carlos plays for Aston Villa again this season, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa's record Premier League goalscorer suggested the club will sign another centre-back on a season-long loan deal to replace him.

Villa confirmed on Monday (15 August) that Carlos ruptured his Achilles tendon in their 2-1 win over Everton on Saturday (13 August)

A source told Football Insider on Tuesday (16 August) that club staff have privately admitted the 29-year-old will not feature again this campaign.

It is understood it could prompt Aston Villa to move for another centre-back before the transfer window closes.

"I did that exact injury in June 2021, a ruptured Achilles," Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

"I can tell you now, if he plays again this season, it will be a miracle. It's such a tough injury, you're not even moving the leg until after four months.

"I don't see him playing again this season, Diego Carlos.

"It's unfortunate for him because he'll miss the World Cup as well. It's horrible for him.

"They need to go into the market. [Ezri] Konsa, [Tyrone] Mings and [Calum] Chambers but you need one more. I think Kortney Hause is going to Watford and maybe thinking about a move.

"For me, I'd keep Kortney Hause and you've got your four there but you don't know where his head is at, does he want first-team football?

"I think a loan would be perfect. A season-long loan for someone who is going to accept being the third or fourth choice."
