Newcastle United are set to step up contract talks with defender Fabian Schar, sources have told Football Insider.

The 33-year-old's current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Schar, who joined Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018, remains a key man for Eddie Howe's side.

The Magpies are keen to sit down and further discuss a potential new agreement for the Switzerland international.

Preliminary talks have already taken place but Newcastle will accelerate negotiations in the coming weeks with the hope of reaching a full agreement.

Schar was in a similar position last year (2024) but signed a 12-month extension at St James' Park after finding himself at the heart of Howe's defence for the majority of the season.

He has made 26 appearances across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign, notching four goals and one assist.

The 86-cap Switzerland star has started in 24 of those outings with Newcastle chasing a return to the Champions League next season.

Schar has made 214 appearances in total for the Tyneside club since his arrival almost seven years ago.

The two problem areas had been earmarked for improvement even before the exits of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly but no suitable targets were found.

Newcastle are expected to address the two positions in what will be a bumper summer window for the St James' Park outfit.

The Magpies are in the final of the League Cup next month and sit sixth in the Premier League with the division's top five sides likely to secure Champions League qualification.
