Transfer expert Guillem Balague has revealed that Rangers are in advanced talks to sign on-loan Granada midfielder Jon Toral.

It was reported on Thursday that the Scottish giants were closing in on the signing of Toral, who is spending the season away from parent club Arsenal.

The central midfielder, 21, had agreed a season-long loan with La Liga outfit Granada but the Scottish Sun claim the Gunners youngster has indicated to Ibrox chiefs he will cut the deal short and move to Scotland for the remainder of the campaign.

Sky Sports' Spanish expert Balague, who is well connected and a reliable source of transfer information, reported on his personal Twitter account on Friday that "things [are] very advanced between Toral and Rangers".

Balague claimed that Granada are "happy" with Toral even though he has made little impact at the Spanish club this season.

The midfielder has recently returned to fitness after a spell out with an ankle injury but was overlooked for much of the campaign when fit and has made just six appearances.

Nevertheless, Rangers fans will be thrilled at the update provided by the reliable Balague, as it appears that the club are closing to securing a deal for a player who has proved his pedigree in the Championship in England.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton knows Toral well from their Brentford days, with Toral having a successful loan season at the London club in 2014-15 in the side as they challenged for promotion to the Premier League.

The Spaniard, who is a central midfielder and was prised by Arsenal from the Barcelona academy in 2011, scored six goals and supplied two assists in 37 appearances for Brentford.

He also had a statistically even more impressive campaign at Birmingham last season, where he scored eight goals and supplied four assists in 38 matches and was voted the Championship club's player of the year.
