Hackett slams 'bad decision' after analysing footage of Sheffield United controversy
Sheffield United did not deserve to give away a penalty against Bournemouth, according to Keith Hackett.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and FIFA referee insisted Sheffield United were the victims of a "bad decision" on the south coast.
Bournemouth were awarded a penalty when Enda Stevens was judged to have fouled Dominic Solanke.
However, the foul appeared to take place just outside the penalty area but Robert Jones pointed the spot.
Solanke converted the penalty before Philip Billing scored the winning goal just minutes later.
"What a bad decision this was and I'm a Wednesdayite," Hackett told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley after analysing footage of the incident.
"It was outside the area and I don't think there was sufficient carry into the penalty area. So, for me, this was a poor decision.
"Let me just clarify on the referee's positioning. The referee is looking for support from the assistant referee in terms of where the foul takes place.
"Here, the assistant referee has to input whether it was inside or outside the penalty area. This is well outside the penalty area.
"The referee is way out of position. That's why he made the error. He was caught on the break, clearly, and the outcome was that he made the decision wrongly.
"The procedure is, he can look across to his assistant and the general activity here is that if the assistant thinks it's a penalty kick he's going to be running across to the corner flag, by action. If he believes it's outside the area you can just stop where it was."
