Hackett: This is what VAR got wrong in Aston Villa v Fulham controversy
Keith Hackett is adamant Andy Madley eventually made the right call by not awarding Aston Villa a penalty against Fulham after Mario Lemina's challenge on Ollie Watkins.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-FIFA and Premier League referee was satisfied by Madley's decision despite him only seeing one angle of the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Madley pointed to the spot after Lemina and Watkins came together challenging for a loose ball at the end of the first half.
However, he was told to review the incident on the pitchside monitor and eventually overturned his decision.
Many Aston Villa fans were critical that he only saw one angle of the challenge - one they felt favoured Lemina.
And while Hackett admitted a second angle would help, the right decision was still made.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “The thing is he’ll view an angle and make the decision on that.
“I would’ve liked to have seen another angle.
“In fairness, he saw that one and I was satisfied that he got the decision right.
“Ideally, you’ve got a technician and the VAR has had the opportunity to see a couple of angles and therefore he’s going to show what the best angle is for the referee to make a judgement. That’s probably what he did.
“You want a quick process, you want an accurate one. On this one, for me the process is right, VAR coming in, the referee being invited to come to the screen.
“But it’s the earlier incident, a few seconds before on the pullback, that he missed.”
