Jean-Philippe Gbamin is set for a major role at Everton as Marco Silva plots a turnaround after the international break, Football Insider understands.

The midfielder, 24, has made just two appearances for the Merseysiders since signing in the summer for around £24million.

An Everton source has told Football Insider that Silva intends to make Gbamin a key member of his side when he is fully fit and firing.

The Portugese has been unable to call upon the Ivory Coast international since injured his quadricep while taking a shot on goal in a training session shortly after his arrival.

However, he returned to on-field training with the Blues last Thursday is eyeing a return to action in the coming weeks.

Silva is planning to re-introduce Gbamin as a substitute rather than slot him straight back into the starting XI.

But he wants to phase the former Mainz ace into his side as he regards Gbamin and Andre Gomes, who is also out injured, as his first choice central midfield pairing.

Silva has been forced to turn to Morgan Schneiderlin as the midfield anchorman for six of Everton's Premier League matches this season.

But the Frenchman has struggled to provide midfield authority alongside Fabian Delph and they have been mainstays of the side that have slumped to four consecutive league defeats.

Everton have scored only six goals in the league this season, but Silva believes the team have suffered because Gbamin has not been able to play.

He was signed as a replacement for Idrissa Gueye, who was sold to PSG in the summer.
