Harry Kane called out by ex-FIFA ref as Norway opener stands vs England

Published on

Harry Kane attempted to con referee Clement Turpin into disallowing Norway's opening goal against England.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that the referee was in a good position to correctly allow the goal to stand.

In the 36th minute, Andreas Schjelderup bamboozled Jordan Pickford with a cross-turned-shot, but it was instantly shrouded in controversy on Saturday, 11 July.

Kane believed he had been fouled by Patrick Berg in the build-up, claiming that his heels had been clipped, but not even a VAR could save the Three Lions' captain.

The debate rolls on around whether a foul should have been awarded, with Gary Neville hitting out at anyone who wanted a free-kick.

Thomas Tuchel's side were punished moments after the incident, but a Jude Bellingham double saved the day in a 2-1 win at the Miami Stadium.

Harry Kane in the wrong before Norway opener

Bellingham equalised before the half-time whistle, somewhat making up for the lapse of concentration, but fans remain frustrated by the incident.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett said: "Harry Kane was trying to buy a free-kick. Referee Turpin was in a good position to view."

"He makes the correct decision, so the goal stands."

Only Schjelderup will know if he meant the goal, but the majority of pundits are choosing to believe that it was moment of pure luck for the Benfica star.

Either way, it put England on the back foot, and without Bellingham to spare their blushes, it may have been a very different half-time talk from Tuchel.

Jordan Pickford blamed vs Norway - rightly or wrongly?

A lot has been made about Tuchel's decision to continue trusting the Pickford, with James Trafford and Dean Henderson on the bench.

He made a couple of mistakes during the group stage games, prompting some fans to call for him to be axed, but he's a history maker for a reason.

The Everton star is undoubtedly going to be disappointed by Norway's opener, even appearing to pull his hand away, but he cannot be fully blamed.

Neville decided that it was the shot-stopper's fault, but given the nature of Schjelderup's interesting strike, it all happened in a split-second.
