Celtic fans are hopeful that Martin O'Neill will soon be returning as their manager after he cancelled a public appearance in the midst of doubts around Wilfried Nancy's future in charge.

O'Neill recently oversaw a successful interim period after he returned to Celtic in October following Brendan Rodgers' resignation.

The Hoops icon led a downtrodden group of players to seven wins in his eight games in charge, and defeated rivals Rangers to help them reach the Premier Sports Cup final.

Nancy was appointed by Celtic last month as a permanent successor to Rodgers, but things have taken a turn for the worse since his arrival, with just two wins in his seven games at the helm so far.

Celtic fans want O'Neill to return to the Parkhead dugout soon, with Nancy under serious pressure as it stands, and some supporters believe that the Northern Irishman may soon be back to save them once more.

O'Neill cancels live event appearance as Nancy faces sack threat

He only signed a rolling contract until a new permanent manager was hired, but Football Insider revealed in November that O’Neill was happy to stay at Celtic until the end of the season amid such a strong spell back in charge.

Following his exit, the 73-year-old admitted that he would have stayed at the club for the rest of the campaign if he had been offered the chance to, saying: “If they had asked me to stay on, I would have done so."

He has since returned to appearing regularly on talkSPORT, and was due to be in front of a live audience with the 'A Celtic State Of Mind' podcast on Friday night, but has cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

The announcement on their X page has sent Celtic fans into a frenzy, with many of the belief that he could soon return to Parkhead once more in place of Nancy.

Celtic fans go crazy as potential O'Neill return touted after cancellation

In reply to the cancellation, one fan asked: "Is he getting announced as the manager at Celtic? Here’s hoping," with a fingers-crossed emoji.

Another asked: "Please tell me it’s because he is back as manager???"

While one fan said: "Get him in. PLEASE!" and another added: "Yes, O’Neill in (the) dugout on Saturday."
