Alan Hutton has hailed Rangers midfielder Steven Davis as the "ideal player" for boss Steven Gerrard.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Rangers full back was full of praise for Davis after he broke Pat Jennings' record for Northern Ireland caps.

Talking to BBC Radio Ulster, Gerrard said of the achievement: "It just goes to show the standards he sets himself on a daily basis.

"To still be performing at such a high level at his age, and to still have the hunger and desire to keep breaking these records is incredible."

The 35-year-old is in his second spell at Rangers and has featured four times for the light blues this season.

Hutton told Football Insider: "It's perfect to have people like that in your squad, he's just a true professional.

"He knew that when he signed him.

"Obviously he's been at a good few clubs now, worked under a lot of good managers and everyone says the same thing.

"It's an ideal player for you. You know exactly what you're going to get whether it be on the training pitch or on the field.

"He's a constant eight or more out of ten, he very rarely has a bad game.

"These is the players that managers want, they want to fall back on these kind of guys.

"He's there to show the younger boys coming through that this is the standard you need to be at and set for yourself to have a long time in the game.

"It's a difficult one to stay current and relevant for so long so my hat is off to him, he's been excellent throughout the years."
