Hutton: My heart bleeds for Simpson after 'nightmare' Rangers update
Alan Hutton has admitted his heart bleeds for Jack Simpson after injury robbed him of a start for Rangers against Cove Rangers.
The former Gers full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, revealed he was looking forward to seeing the January signing line up against the League One side.
As quoted by the Daily Record before Sunday's game, Gerrard confirmed he wanted to start Simpson but a minor ankle injury ruled him out.
The 24-year-old watched on as an unused substitute as the Gers romped home to a 4-0 win.
Simpson has made just two appearances for Rangers since his January move from Bournemouth.
Both came from the substitutes' bench, with the likes of Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun preferred in the starting XI.
Hutton admitted opportunities were limited at Ibrox and it could be a while before Simpson gets another chance to start.
As such, he sent his sympathies the way of the new arrival.
"I really feel sorry for him," Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
"I was actually looking forward to seeing him play because I quite like that left-sided centre half. It brings a lot of balance. He's had to wait for each opportunity that and was it.
"For something like a rolled ankle or just a little tweak the day before, it's an absolute nightmare because now we don't know when the next opportunity is going to come.
"So I do feel for him. Overall, I think he's an excellent player. He's been brought into the club in January to get used to it. He'll possibly hit the ground running for next season.
"There's going to be plenty of opportunities for him moving forward. It's just a shame that we couldn't see it Sunday."
