Hutton: This is why Rangers threw transfer curveball and let Itten leave on deadline day
Alan Hutton insists sending Cedric Itten out on loan is a sensible move by Rangers.
The Ibrox icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as last season's summer signing departed the club.
On Tuesday, Rangers announced Itten had joined Bundesliga side Greuther Furth on a season-long loan.
The side are currently 16th in the Bundesliga after a disappointing start to the season.
The forward has made four appearances for Rangers this season but only racked up 106 minutes, coming off the bench on three occasions.
During his first season at the club, the Switzerland international bagged eight goals in 38 outings.
Hutton claims there are a number of reasons why Itten was allowed to move, with the opportunity of game time chief among them.
"It was a bit of a curveball, not one I saw coming," Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
"Obviously his first season was difficult, there were not fans, he didn't hit the ground running.
"There was loads of competition upfront as well. When called upon he did well.
"Whenever I saw him play he added something a little bit different to that Rangers side.
"It's a strange one but I think it's down to Morelos staying. Obviously if he went, they would have needed someone to come in.
"The fact he stayed gave Gerrard a bit of leeway to send someone out on loan to give him game time, that's what he needs.
"There is a player in there, he's a finisher. He needs to play games, I think it's a good move."
