Hutton warns Gerrard over weak link Balogun after what he's seen at Rangers
Leon Balogun is "not up to scratch" playing as a right-back for Rangers, according to Alan Hutton.
The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 32-year-old was proving to be a weak link in Steven Gerrard's backline after his recent performances.
With James Tavernier out injured, Gerrard has rotated between Balogun and young full-back Nathan Patterson at right-back.
The Nigeria international got the nod against Celtic on Sunday but failed to stop Odsonne Edouard's cross for the Hoops' opener.
Balogun was replaced by Patterson just before the hour mark at Parkhead as the game ended 1-1.
Hutton has now warned Gerrard he could come unstuck against better teams if he continues to play the summer signing at right-back.
Hutton told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: "Look, he's not a right-back. He looked like a centre-back playing right-back and it looked like Celtic were targeting that area.
"I obviously saw in the Slavia Prague Nathan Patterson come off, it looked like he cramped up in both calves. Whether he just couldn't quite get over that, it was a quick turnaround to the Sunday.
"It was such a massive game, maybe Steven Gerrard didn't want to take the risk.
"He (Balogun) can do a job, he can fill in. I think when you play the better teams, you're going to get tested more defensively with your positioning. He's just not up to scratch as a right-back.
"He'll give his all but it's not his position. It's difficult to judge him. It looked to me like Celtic definitely targeted that area, especially in the first half."
Balogun has played 28 times across all competitions this season, with 15 league starts under his belt.
