Paul Robinson has hailed the ambition of Ross Barkley after Dean Smith revealed that the midfielder moved to Aston Villa to try and earn a spot in the England squad for next summer's Euros.

The 41-time England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, said that it is "great news" for Dean Smith to have a hungry and talented player in his squad.

Barkley scored the only goal of Villa's 1-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday, his second in as many games since joining on loan from Chelsea earlier this month.

Dean Smith revealed after the victory that he lured the attacking midfielder to Villa Park with the promise that he would get in Gareth Southgate's squad for next summer's Euros if he signed.

Robinson lauded Barkley's decision to leave Stamford Bridge in search of more game time.

"I love seeing players who have the ambition to play," he told Football Insider. "Too many players do not have it.

"We saw it with Danny Rose. He forced through a loan move because he was not getting anywhere near the Spurs team.

"It was a move that was made with an eye to the European Championships. We are now in the same situation because of Covid, the Euros is again on the horizon.

"To see a player of Ross Barkley's quality leave Chelsea to get regular game time and try and force his way into the England squad is fantastic for him and great for Villa.

"Dean Smith has a player that is hungry that also has bags of ability."
