'I want FIFA to act' - Argentina face strong punishment for what they did straight after beating England

The Argentinian FA are likely to face a "large fine" after showing a political-related banner during the full-time scenes against England.

That is according to former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, Keith Hackett, who exclusively told Football Insider that a punishment is "inevitable" after displaying the message to the world.

At full-time, Giovani Lo Celso unveiled a banner saying, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to “The Malvinas are Argentine".

This, of course, relates to when Argentina’s military government invaded the Falkland Islands in 1982 in an attempt take the territory from the United Kingdom.

There had been a lot of talk and debate around the fierce history in the lead-up to the game, and now it remains one of the biggest headlines after the football has finished.

Many have suggested that the Argentinian FA should face a huge punishment from FIFA, and it would appear that Hackett shares that sentiment.

'I want FIFA to act - a large fine is inevitable'

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former FIFA referee slammed the use of a political banner, stating that the governing body have no choice but to act.

"Any political slogan is frowned upon by football authorities. It is, of course, almost impossible to control and stop these political actions [by fans] from entering a sports arena," he said.

"I was already disappointed that the idea of a war between Argentina and England that happened years ago could bring FIFA to announce prematurely that if Argentina or England were to qualify for the final, English referees would not be considered.

"It is FIFA's loss that the best performing official Michael Oliver, and his colleague Anthony Taylor, were out of selection, being released to enable them to return to their countries.

"I want FIFA to act. They will have witnessed it, so a large fine is inevitable".

Which other teams could be punished at the 2026 World Cup?

Hackett has already suggested that referee Ilgiz Tantashev requires further training following his role in the dangerous game between Paraguay and France.

Didier Deschamps' side were on the wrong end of some heavy blows, with the Paraguayans coming into the game with the mindset, clearly of hurting their opponents.

That is exactly why Hackett told Football Insider that the Paraguayan FA deserves to be punished financially for allowing their players to act the way they did.

Paraguay's prize money would have been pretty outstanding, having beaten Germany to reach the round of 16, but that could all be taken away.
