Rangers chiefs have raised their eyebrows at Steven Gerrard's decision to let Jamie Murphy go after the barnstorming start to his Burton Albion career, Football Insider understands.

The winger, 30, made just two substitute appearances for the Scottish giants this season before he joined Nigel Clough's League One outfit at the end of last month.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that it has not gone unnoticed among club chiefs that Murphy has made an immediate big impact for Burton while Gerrard is making little use of a plethora of wingers.

Brandon Barker, Jordan Jones and Sheyi Ojo, who were all signed last summer, have been virtually ignored by the manager during the wretched run that has left Rangers' title hopes hanging by a thread.

Ojo and Jones have each had just one start in the eight matches since the winter break, while Barker has not played at all since the 17th January win against Stranraer.

Murphy had endured an even lowlier fate before Gerrard granted his wish for regular football to reignite his faltering career.

He had not made a single start for Rangers since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on Kilmarnock's plastic pitch in August 2018.

The former Premier League wide man had been unable to convince Gerrard that he had recovered the zip and turn of speed that made him a key player in his first half-season at Ibrox.

The left-winger, signed from Brighton in January 2018, has hit the ground running, however, at Burton.

He has started five consecutive league matches, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Murphy has completed two of those games and was withdrawn late on in the other three as he tries to keep 12th-placed Burton in touch with the play-off challengers.
