Keith Hackett slams 'poor decision' as Germany vs Paraguay controversy re-analysed
Keith Hackett has insisted that Germany's second goal against Paraguay should not have been disallowed before they lost on penalties in the World Cup round of 32.
Germany crashed out of the World Cup with a penalty shootout loss to Paraguay on Monday night after a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes.
Julian Nagelsmann's side were unable to progress past the round of 32 stage in North America, meaning they have yet to win a knockout match since lifting the trophy in 2014.
They thought they had gone 2-1 up in extra time as Bayern Munich defender Jonathan Tah powered Nathaniel Brown's corner home.
The goal was then ruled out as Waldemar Anton was deemed to have fouled Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill after a VAR review.
Referee Jalal Jayed came in for some criticism after deciding to cancel the goal, with Alan Shearer insisting live on air that he had been "conned" by Gill.
The damage has been done with Germany now out of the tournament, but former FIFA referee Hackett has voiced his displeasure at the decision.
Keith Hackett has his say on Germany's disallowed goal vs Paraguay
DFB-team boss Nagelsmann could not hide his grievances after the defeat, as he condemned the decision as a "major error" and "a scandal."
Former FIFA official and PGMOL boss Hackett, has shared his view on the VAR call, with Gill again deemed to have made the most of the contact with Anton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, he said: "In the first half of extra time, Germany scored, and after a VAR review the referee determined that the goalkeeper had been impeded.
"In my opinion, this was a poor decision. Football is a contact sport and the goalkeeper went to ground far too easily.
What has Hackett said about Jamal Musiala's potential red card offence?
The German players became increasingly frustrated in extra time, with star man Musiala taking his anger out on Matias Galarza in the 115th minute.
He went steaming into a challenge on the Paraguay winger and was booked for his offence, with Hackett exclusively telling Football Insider that Musiala should have been sent off by referee Jayed.
He said: "A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play. Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.
"When you read the law, then I am satisfied that Jamal Musiala should have received a red card for this challenge. There was malice, born from frustration. There was clearly excessive force that endangered the safety of his opponent, and the German player was out of control when he made the lunge.
"This should have resulted in a red card. I was disappointed that VAR failed to intervene."
