Leeds United fans have been demanding that Vurnon Anita is offloaded in the summer transfer window after failing to impress in his first season at Elland Road.

Anita, 29, joined the Whites on a free transfer after he was released by Newcastle, who has just won the Championship title with the Dutchman playing a key role in the side.

Many Newcastle fans were actually surprised to see Rafa Benitez get rid of the former Ajax player, who had served as a great utility play at St James' Park thanks to his versatility making him a great option to plug gaps when there are injuries and suspensions.

Leeds clearly had a similar plan when Anita arrived at Elland Road with him at first playing at left-back when Gaetano Berardi was injured and Thomas Christiansen was left unimpressed by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.

He has since had roles at right-back and in the defensive midfield, but Leeds fans have simply failed to take to the 29-year-old and want him gone in the summer.

One Whites supporter even claimed that Anita should be "sold in the Woolworths bargain bin".

Here is a selection of their tweets:

Anita has made 22 appearances in all competitions after signing for United in the summer.

He was left on the bench for the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa last week with Paul Heckingbottom picking left-winger Stuart Dallas to play out of his comfort zone at right-back instead.
