Leeds United defender Conor Shaughnessy is set to undergo ankle surgery in another shattering blow for the injury and suspension ravaged team, according to a reliable journalist. BBC Radio Leeds correspondent Adam Pope reported on his personal Twitter account at lunchtime on Friday that the defender, 21, has a "similar" problem to Luke Ayling, who underwent surgery on his ankle last month and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Pope braced United fans for the same scenario with rising star Shaughnessy as he delivered an update on what would be a shattering blow for player and club.

Shaughnessy was sat down near the back of the room with his right leg in a protective boot as Paul Heckingbottom addressed the Leeds players for the first time last week following his appointment as manager.

The 21-year-old joined the United walking wounded when he limped out of their 0-0 draw against Hull on 30 January after just six minutes.
Former manager Thomas Christiansen subsequently claimed, as reported by Leeds Live, that the Irishman would be out for "weeks" rather than months.
But that prognosis now appears completely incorrect as Shaughnessy prepares to undergo an operation.
The defender has made 14 appearances for Leeds this season, as he has frequently been called upon to reinforce the backline.
