Leeds United are strong favourites to sign Barnsley defender Andy Yiadom at the end of the season, according to a reliable journalist.

The Sun's transfer expert Alan Nixon reported on his personal Twitter account on Sunday morning that United have moved into pole position to land the in-demand Ghana international, 26.

Yiadom is available on a free transfer when his contract ends at Barnsley in June.

He got over the disappointment of the failed transfer to the big time by getting his head down at Barnsley, and there is widespread interest in his services ahead of the summer.

Football Insider verdict:

Right-back has been a problem position for Leeds this season despite a wealth of Championship experience in that position, through Luka Ayling, Gaetano Berardi and makeshift trio Stuart Dallas, Matthew Pennington and Vurnon Anita. First choice Ayling had a wretched campaign before an ankle injury in January ruled him out for the rest of the season, while Berardi's limitations were not masked by his commitment and never-say-die spirit before his red-card fever brought a premature end to his season. Heckingbottom knows Yiadom's game inside out and can install him as a first-team regular at Elland Road. Signing a defender who can hit the ground running in the Championship would be a smart move, as Heckingbottom will now be painfully aware that the current United squad are nowhere near good enough to challenge for promotion.
