Lewis Hall: Newcastle trigger clause but payment delayed - sources

Newcastle United have triggered a clause to sign Lewis Hall on a permanent deal from Chelsea although the payment will not be made until July, sources have told Football Insider. 

The obligation-to-buy clause was activated after the Magpies’ 4-0 victory over Tottenham on 13 April ensured they will finish no lower than 14th in the Premier League this season. 

The deal for the 19-year-old is worth £28million after the left-back initially made the switch to St James’ Park on loan last summer for an initial fee of £4m.

It was a surprise to many when Hall made the move to Newcastle after the Chelsea academy product was previously viewed as an exciting talent at Stamford Bridge. 

The Magpies took advantage of the Blues’ need to sell players as they looked to balance the books following their extraordinary summer of 2023 spending spree. 

It’s been a difficult first season on Tyneside for the England U-21 international as he’s been named in the starting line-up on just six occasions. 

The left-back has averaged a reasonable 1.5 tackles per game, but his attacking play has slightly let him down, having been successful with just 38 per cent of his dribbles and 25 per cent of his crosses. 

It may sound like a sizeable fee to pay for a teenager, but Hall now has some decent Premier League experience under his belt and has plenty of scope for improvement under Eddie Howe. 

The money will provide a much-needed boost to Chelsea’s coffers as they continue to toe the financial fair play line, while the Magpies have secured a player who could go on to have a promising career.
