Paul Robinson has told Liverpool to make a move for Declan Rice instead of Ruben Neves in the January transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one has doubts over Neves, 25, and his defensive capabilities.

Jurgen Klopp's side have their eye on a number of midfielders this January.

Neves, who has 18 months left on his contract at Molineux, has been in impressive form of late.

When asked by Football Insider if the Portugal international would be a welcome addition at Anfield, Robinson said: "Neves is a sensational player.

"He would be a welcome addition to any side in the Premier League. Not only is he a top midfielder but he is a great set-piece taker.

"I wonder if he has the defensive capabilities Liverpool need though. They need players who can protect that back four because Fabinho and Jordan Henderson are not at their best right now.

"I think Liverpool should be targeting a more defensive midfielder. I'm talking about a player like Declan Rice. He has proven that he can affect both ends of the pitch. He could sit in front of that back four and protect them.

"Neves can do that but I wonder say that is the strongest aspect of his game. I think they should be going for a more defensive-minded midfielder."
