Liverpool close in on Alphonso Davies - sources

Liverpool scouts have been tracking Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies ahead of a potential free transfer, sources close to the club have told Football Insider.

Davies, 24, is out of contract at Bayern at the end of the season and will be able to enter negotiations about a pre-contract deal from January onwards.

As a result, there is expected to be a hefty signing-on fee in any agreement, as well as the left-back's high wage demands, which could prove prohibitive.

Liverpool were thought to have been priced out of a deal as a result, but they feel they will be able to reach an agreement which works for both parties.

Football Insider revealed on 8 December that Real Madrid are the current favourites to land a deal for the left-back, while there is also competition from other elite European teams.

Despite interest from elsewhere, Los Blancos remain the leading candidates to secure his signature and have already been working to convince him to move to Spain.

Liverpool scouts have been in attendance at a number of Bayern Munich games so far this season to assess whether Davies would fit their style under Slot's management.

However, they are expected to face stiff competition from clubs across Europe for his signature.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown previously told Football Insider that United will attempt to beat Real Madrid to the signing of Davies.

Ruben Amorim's side are keen to sign a new left-back amid concerns about Luke Shaw's availability and the performances of Tyrell Malacia in the wing-back position.

Similarly, concerns have emerged about the recent performances of Andy Robertson at Liverpool and there is a growing feeling that a replacement will be needed.

Brown told Football Insider on 5 December that Milos Kerkez and Antonee Robinson had emerged on their list of targets for the position.

However, scouts have also been following Davies as they plot a swoop for the highly-regarded left-back who is viewed as a potential statement signing.
