Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Cologne left-back Jonas Hector by scouting him at the weekend, Football Insider sources understand.

The Merseysiders also kept tabs on Hector's team-mate Timo Horn as their German scout Matthias Hamann watched the pair in action in Sunday’s 2-0 Bundesliga defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

The pair are on the radar of the Premier League giants as they step up plans to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Liverpool are compiling dossiers on Hector and Horn, following their encouraging displays this season.

Hamann, who is the brother of former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann, has attended most of Cologne's matches this year on behalf of the English club.

As revealed by Football Insider, Hector is on Liverpool's left-back shortlist as they prepare to bring in competition for Alberto Moreno next season.

The 25-year-old is in line to be Germany’s left-back in the European Championships after emerging as Joachim Low's first choice in that position.

Liverpool are also looking for a new goalkeeper to compete with established No1 Simon Mignolet, with Adam Bogdan set to leave at the end of the season.

Cologne academy graduate Horn, 22, has been a mainstay of the team in recent seasons and has already made 137 first-team appearances. He has also played four times for Germany at Under-21 level.

In other Liverpool transfer news, a midfielder has revealed he has already held talks with Jurgen Klopp about a summer move to Anfield.
