Liverpool voted in favour of new anchoring regulations as it will weaken both Manchester United and Manchester City more than them.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that he was initially surprised by the stance taken by Liverpool in the latest Premier League vote.

Top flight clubs met last Monday (29 April) to discuss new financial regulations which will cap spending to a multiple of the lowest earnings in the division.

Only three clubs - Aston Villa, Manchester United and Manchester City - voted against the proposal meaning the rules will now be introduced in the 2025-26 season.

Liverpool vote will hurt rivals Man City and Man United

However, Maguire believes that FSG will have calculated that the new regulations will impact rivals Manchester United and Manchester City more than them.

"Given that Liverpool have high revenue generation and commercial income, I was a little bit surprised by their vote," Maguire told Football Insider's Sean Fisher.

"But they are not generating quite as much as Manchester United and Manchester City, and therefore they will have done their sums.

"There's one thing you have to admire FSG for, which is the amount of forensic attention to detail that they undertake before making any decision.

"They will have realised that it would impact Manchester United and Manchester City marginally more than it would impact them.

"Therefore it was in Liverpool's best interests to vote for the anchoring rules."
