Ilkay Gundogan has revealed he called Jurgen Klopp for advice before signing for Manchester City this summer.

The Sky Blues recruit worked under the Liverpool manager while he was still in charge at Dortmund and joined City in a £19.7million deal last month.

Gundogan will be coached by another former Bundesliga man, Pep Guardiola, at City, but he admitted he wanted the advice of his former manager before making the decision to leave Germany.

'Of course I talked to Jurgen Klopp,' said Gundogan speaking to the Manchester Evening News.

'We discussed a few things and I asked if I would fit in the Premier League and he said 'definitely, definitely yes'.

'He wishes me the best and me also for him.'

City have enjoyed a busy summer so far with Spain international Nolito becoming the second big signing and Guardiola being introduced to the supporters for the first time over the weekend.

Liverpool are currently preparing for their pre-season tour of America and have welcomed some excellent players to Anfield such as Sadio Mane and Joel Matip.

Although Liverpool were never interested in Gundogan, the Reds have been linked with another of Klopp's former players, Mario Gotze.

However, that deal looks dead in the water after both Bayern Munich and Gotze insisted the playmaker was going nowhere this summer.

Liverpool have been linked with a host of midfield options this summer with Piotr Zielinski and Mahmoud Dahoud both rumoured to be high on Klopp's wishlist.

In other Liverpool news, Tottenham are being tipped to move for a Germany international the Reds are thought to be keen on.
