Sources: Big twist in Wijnaldum future at Liverpool amid new talks
Liverpool will make fresh attempts to tie Georginio Wijnaldum to a new contract in the new year, Football Insider understands.
Talks between the Holland international and the Premier League champions have collapsed and it has been widely reported that he is set to leave when his current deal expires next June.
But Liverpool have not completely given up all hope of holding on to a player who Jurgen Klopp rates very highly and who remains a virtually nailed-on starter.
A Liverpool source has told Football Insider the club will try again in the new year to revive discussions with Wijnaldum.
The Merseysiders' hierarchy are aware the Dutchman has interest from elite European clubs and can sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas side from 1 January.
The likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid have been strongly linked with a player instrumental in Liverpool's dominance since his £25million arrival from Newcastle United in 2016.
Liverpool offered Wijnaldum a four-year deal earlier this year but could not reach an agreement.
Nevertheless, the Dutchman sought, and was given, assurances he would remain a key figure in Klopp's Champions League and Premier League-winning team.
That has proved to be the case and the versatile midfielder has started eight of the team's nine Premier League matches this season as well as three of their four Champions League fixtures.
In a campaign in which Liverpool's midfield has been severely hit by injury - Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all had absences of varying lengths, Wijnaldum's availability and durability is much admired.
He has made 201 appearances for the club in four years, scoring 19 goals and supplying 16 assists.
