Liverpool are planning to sign a new centre-back and a right-back in the summer transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Liverpool “definitely need” to sign a centre-back regardless of what happens with Virgil Van Dijk.

They are expected to do so as well as sign a right-back should Trent Alexander-Arnold, as expected, leave for Real Madrid.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk is out of contract at the end of this season and has yet to commit his future to the club, which is a similar situation for Mohamed Salah and Alexander-Arnold.

The Reds have dealt with serious injury problems to their other centre-backs, with Joe Gomez currently on the sidelines which is why further cover is needed.

Former Liverpool centre-back Sepp van den Berg revealed to Voetbal Primeur that he dreams of returning to Anfield one day which sparked conversations about him potentially being brought back in the summer.

However, well-placed sources have told Football Insider that a move for the 23-year-old is unlikely as he isn’t seen as the answer to Liverpool’s problems, nor does Brentford want to sell him.

Liverpool will also be in the market for other defenders

The future of Alexander-Arnold is also up in the air due to his contract and interest from Real Madrid.

Connor Bradley is hoping to secure the first-choice right-back option under Arne Slot if Alexander-Arnold does move on, but this is another position where Liverpool will need further strength in depth.

Industry insider Mick Brown revealed to Football Insider that Alexander-Arnold is now expected to leave Liverpool in what is being seen as a “no-brainer” of a decision.

Arne Slot is considering selling other Liverpool players

While Liverpool could be set to lose a trio of crucial first-team players, the Reds boss is also looking to sell two other first-team players.

Football Insider revealed that Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz could be sold in the summer transfer window to provide finances for reinvestment.

This would allow Slot to strengthen the club and bring in new players who he has hand-picked for the first time.
