Liverpool are Napoli's main competition for Porto's Hector Herrera but have to yet to enter into any meaningful negotiations for the player, according to a report.

The central midfielder has enjoyed a fine season with the Portugese club, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in 29 league appearances.

Reports in Mexico this week claimed Liverpool had managed to pip Napoli to the signature of Herrera after agreeing a fee with Porto, but Sky Italia now claim Liverpool are yet to firm up their interest in the midfielder.

The Mexico international's situation is somewhat complicated by the fact he is owned in part by Porto and then 30 percent by former club Pachuca. Significantly, third party ownership of a player is banned in the English game.

Napoli are claimed to have increased their initial offer for Herrera's services from £8million to somewhere in the region of £12million and Sky Italy report the Serie A club have an agreement in principle to buy the player.

Herrera is currently on international duty with Mexico as they look to claim their first Copa America victory in their history.

The box-to-box midfielder bagged a late goal in Mexico's impressive opening 3-1 win against Uruguay on Monday and has been tipped to be one of the competitions stand-out performers.
