Liverpool icon Luis Suarez has backed under-fire striker Darwin Nunez to come good despite recent criticism from manager Arne Slot.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Slot said of the 25-year-old: "I will tell him that you can miss a chance but you cannot miss out on work-rate.

"That is the life of a striker, he will miss chances and score some. It is part of the job of a No 9, you miss when people expect you to score. It is not part of the job of a No 9 to slow down in work-rate. And that is something we will talk about.

"I can accept every miss, especially from a player who scored two very important goals away at Brentford and that scored for us in the home game against Villa. I would prefer him to score but the word 'chance' says it all."

One leading pundit believes Nunez isn't going to be at Liverpool for much longer despite his positive relationship with the fans.

The striker has struggled so far this season, starting 16 of his 35 games across all competitions, scoring six goals, and providing five assists in his 1710 minutes of action.

Suarez, 38, who spent three years at Liverpool before leaving for Barcelona back in 2014, is currently plying his trade at Inter Miami with Lionel Messi, scoring 25 goals in his 37 games since joining in December 2023.

Nunez took to X, formally known as Twitter, to address the Liverpool fans and let them know he has no intention of giving up despite his poor form.

Suarez, who seemingly has a close relationship with Nunez, promptly responded to give his Uruguayan a much-needed boost, saying: "Of course, GOAL SCORER, that's how I love you! That's the attitude, always positive. Let's go up!"

Slot’s side will take on current Premier League champions Man City on Sunday (February 23) in what is likely to be a crucial game for both clubs.
