Luke Shaw is set for a new role in Ruben Amorim's Man United side after returning from injury, according to the club's former chief scout.

Mick Brown, who spent over a decade at Old Trafford during their most successful period and remains very well-connected there, exclusively told Football Insider that the 29-year-old could be utilised as a left-sided centre-back, rather than a wing-back.

This comes following the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, when Shaw was brought on to replace Jonny Evans at the back as he made his return.

His 34 minutes off the bench were his first for United since February despite having played for England during the summer, with various muscle injuries ruling him out.

However, upon his return to training and first-team football, Amorim is set to test him out in the back three while utilising one of Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui and Tyrell Malacia as the wing-back.

Shaw was used in a back three under Erik ten Hag prior to his injury and has proven he is capable of playing the role to good effect.

Brown went on to explain that there will be rotation throughout the squad given the number of players available to Amorim while he attempts to figure out his best side.

Shaw's return from injury has been tipped as a huge boost for United, who have struggled with options in his position so far this season.

Now, Brown, who has a wealth of experience working closely with players and managers at the top level, has insisted that Amorim will look to experiment with the left-back as he has proven his versatility and talent in the past.

"I've heard Amorim is going to experiment with his role," he told Football Insider.

"If we go back prior to his injury, he was often played as the left centre-back.

"I remember a game against City in particular where he was brilliant there, and he looked to make that position his own.

"And that's where he came on again against Ipswich, when he replaced Evans.

"But that raises it's own questions, like what does that mean for Martinez?

"You've got Dalot, Mazraoui and even Malacia as options for the wing-back position too.

"These are questions to which Amorim will have to find out the answers.

"So he's going to be used in that left-centre-back role but of course he'll push forward sometimes as well because there are other players who will expect to start in those positions."
