Manchester City defender Jadel Katongo is in advanced talks to re-join Peterborough United on loan before Friday’s transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.

Katongo spent all of last season on loan at Peterborough and impressed during his time at London Road.

The 19-year-old started in 33 of his 43 appearances across the campaign as Darren Ferguson’s side missed on promotion in the League One play-offs.

Katongo is well down the pecking order at the Etihad and Man City are happy to loan him out again to ensure he can get more regular first-team football under his belt.

Katongo has spent several years with Man City after joining the club’s academy at Under-9s level a decade ago.

The Manchester-born defender was handed his first professional contract in 2022 and featured for the Under-23s side in the EFL Trophy in the 2022/23 campaign.

After impressing for the Premier League champions’ youth teams, he joined Peterborough on loan in August last year.

Despite a slow start to life at London Road, Katongo eventually went on to earn a regular spot in their backline in the second half of the campaign, predominantly featuring at right-back.

The England U-20 international started in both of Peterborough’s League One play-off matches against Oxford United, where they lost 2-1 on aggregate to the now-Championship club.

But Katongo did get his hands on some silverware last season after the Cambridgeshire-based outfit beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-1 in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley.

Peterborough

Ferguson’s side have had a reasonable start to the new campaign after winning two of their opening three games, placing them just outside the play-off spots.

Peterborough are now progressing in their bid to bring Katongo back to London Road as talks are advancing over another loan move for the teenager.
