Manchester United could be forced to significantly reduce their spending if they fail to qualify for the Champions League again this season, sources have told Football Insider.

Man United looked set to miss out on a European spot altogether for this campaign before their unexpected FA Cup final victory over Manchester City earned them a place in the Europa League.

But Erik ten Hag’s side have endured a difficult start to the new season after winning just two of their opening five Premier League fixtures, ensuring they are already four points off the top-four places.

They also drew 1-1 with FC Twente in their first Europa League group stage game, piling the pressure onto their Dutch manager just over a month into the campaign.

Sources have told Football Insider the Manchester giants can’t afford another year without Champions League revenue and “big” cuts will be required if they fail to make the top four or win the Europa League this season.

United spent £205.9million on transfers during the summer window after bringing in five new additions to strengthen their squad.

Although Uefa’s competition revamp has seen an increase in prize money for clubs competing in Europe, the Europa League is worth far less than the riches on offer in the Champions League.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider United will have a £100million hole in this season’s accounts after failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Any extra revenue is vital for co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his staff as they look to rebuild the club and embark on several new projects.

The Premier League giants are currently considering funding options as part of their plans to either build a new stadium or redevelop Old Trafford, while they are also planning to spend £50million on refurbishing their Carrington training ground.

United’s latest accounts for 2023-24 revealed they generated a club-record revenue of £661.8million despite recording a net loss of £113.2million last season.
