Man United are desperate not to let Harry Maguire leave the club for free in 2025, sources have told Football Insider.

The 31-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford until the end of this season - but United have the option to extend his deal a further 12 months.

It is believed Man United will try to find a new club for the defender in the January window to avoid activating that extension clause.

Maguire previously came close to joining West Ham last year (2023) but was unwilling to take a pay cut to move to the London Stadium.

The former Leicester star earns a reported wage of £190,000-a-week at Old Trafford.

He has been content to stay with the Red Devils and fight for a starting berth - and was successful last season amid injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt joined Erik ten Hag's side during the off-season.

The England international has kept his place on the international stage despite uncertainty over his club future and made an 85-minute appearance against Ireland earlier this month.

Maguire has made seven appearances this term, starting in five of those outings - but was missing through injury for the 3-0 defeat against Tottenham on Sunday (29 September).

He has made 213 Red Devils appearances since his reported £80million arrival from Leicester in 2019.
