Marcus Edwards has thanked the Tottenham fans for their support after his debut for the club in midweek.

The teenage sensation came off the substitute's bench to play the last 15 minutes of Wednesday's 5-0 League Cup hammering of third tier side Gillingham.

Edwards, 17, has a burgeoning reputation after impressing in Spurs' youth set-up in recent years as well as dazzling during pre-season for the senior team.

The left-footed playmaker was hailed as a future great in the build-up to the League Cup win by manager Mauricio Pochettino, who compared his style of play to Lionel Messi.

During his short cameo against Gillingham, Edwards gave glimpses of his potential with his neat footwork and inventiveness, and even came close to scoring the team's sixth goal.

Fans came him a rousing reception and the player took to Twitter to thank them for their support.

Edwards is unlikely to be in the squad for Spurs' Premier League trip to Middlebrough on Saturday, and may not be involved for some time as the club have been drawn away to Liverpool in the next round of the League Cup.

In other Tottenham team news, Erik Lamela was named in the team of the round for the EFL Cup after his exceptional performance against Gillingham.
