Marcus Rashford among two stars Man United could sell to boost PSR position
Marcus Rashford is likely to be heading for a permanent Manchester United exit after joining Barcelona on loan over the summer.
Barcelona signed Rashford on a season-long loan deal from Man United after Ruben Amorim made it clear he wasn’t in his plans.
Rashford has been tipped to make a permanent move to Barcelona following his impressive form for the Catalan side.
The Spanish giants hold the option to buy the England international for around £30million next summer.
However, Rashford could have to accept a pay cut to join Barcelona permanently due to his £325,000-a-week wages.
Man United could cash in on Kobbie Mainoo
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Man United could also sell fellow academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo to boost their profit and sustainability (PSR) position.
Man United were previously close to breaching the PSR rules, with Premier League clubs permitted to lose £105m over a rolling three-year period.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I don't think they've got a huge PSR issue. Uefa is dependent on qualifying for a Uefa competition obviously, but I don't think it's so significant that it couldn't be bridged.
“They have some young players who ultimately, the sort of Mainoo situation might resolve itself to lead to more comfort. Likewise, Rashford is likely to go for let's say £25m, which isn't a great fee for the player, but it is going to deliver £25m of profit in their PSR calculation.
“Mainoo, what's he worth? Maybe £40-50m, so it's likely that somebody will buy him if United wanted to sell him, and that will make a big impact on their PSR calculations.”
Mainoo has been linked with a Man United exit for some time, with the 20-year-old failing to start in any of his seven Premier League appearances at the start of this season.
Man United backed to agree deals in January
Sky Sports reported on 11 November Amorim’s side are not expected to bring in any incomings in the January transfer window.
However, Borson insisted that might not be the case.
“I think they've got some leeway if they wanted to spend, and I think they may well do it,” said Borson.
“It looks like they're in the mix for the Champions League. I think it might be slightly different if they're in a situation where they're battling to get into say the Conference League or Europa League.
“I mean, those obviously aren't as lucrative and, therefore, don't justify the sort of spending that you might see in January, but I just wouldn't rule anything out right now. I think that they'll be opportunistic.”
Man United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, but they are only one point behind fourth-place Sunderland after 11 matches.
