Rangers are plotting a move to sign defensive midfielder Marko Soldo in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O'Rourke revealed that the club's financial position has cast doubt over their ability to get the deal over the line in January.

Croatian outfit NK Osijek are set to demand a "huge" fee for the midfielder, which may prove too expensive for Rangers to match.

However, the Glasgow club have been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old's progress for a while and are now interested in securing a deal for his signature.

Rangers are keen to sign a new midfielder to help bolster Philippe Clement's starting XI, and have identified Soldo as an ideal option for the role.

A Croatian Under-21 international, Soldo is very highly though of in his home country and his club are reluctant to see him leave mid-way through the season.

Rangers have struggled for defensive midfield options so far this season, with the likes of Nicolas Raskin, Mohamed Diomande and Conor Barron better utilised further forward.

They have lacked a metronomic passer to sit behind the midfield who can keep the ball moving while breaking up play and kickstarting moves from the back.

As a result, Solko has emerged as one of the key options for the position, and sources say he is a player who ticks plenty of boxes for Clement's side.

Following their dreadful start to the season, Rangers are keen to back the manager in the January transfer market in the hope of a late season turnaround.

A new defensive midfielder is near the top of their list of targets and they are prepared to work on a deal which better suits their financial position.
