McAvennie: Celtic told to sign Hickey after he shares 'come-and-get-me plea'
Celtic should re-ignite interest in Aaron Hickey after he made a 'come and get me plea' to his boyhood club.
That's according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Hickey's recent comments.
Hickey, 18, signed for Bologna in the summer of 2020 though he recently told The Glasgow Times that there was heavy interest from Celtic, the club he still supports.
Hickey said, "I’m a Celtic supporter and it was massive for me, but I just didn’t think it was the right time to go there."
McAvennie insists that Celtic should try again for Hickey this summer after his recent comments especially as it looks like Diego Laxalt won't be staying.
"It sounds like a come-and-get-me plea. He's a good left-back the young boy, I would take him," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
"Laxalt's going to go back, it depends what they want for him but I don't think he'll end up being our left-back next season.
"I like him. I feel for Laxalt because the defence has been all over the shop, it looks like it's never been worked on.
"John Kennedy keeps saying they work on the defence day and night but it doesn't look like that to me.
"If they are, then the players just aren't listening, the same goes for Jonjoe Kenny as well.
"If that young boy came in, he's a good player, a good talent but for him to come in Celtic need to buy some experienced centre-halves."
Laxalt, 28, has made 17 Scottish Premiership appearances for Celtic since he joined on loan from AC Milan last summer.
Hickey was recent named as one of the top 50 young players in the world by French publication L'EQUIPE as his stock continues to rise.
