McAvennie thrilled with 'top class' Starfelt after what he spotted in Celtic clash

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie claims the signing of Carl Starfelt is a great piece of business after his start to life at Celtic.

The Parkhead icon, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has been impressed by his former side's new defender.

On July 27th, Celtic announced the signing of Starfelt, 26, from Rubin Kazan for a fee of over £4million.

The Sweden international was thrown in from the start as Celtic lost 2-1 to Hearts on Saturday night.

He also started as the Hoops defeated Jablonec in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

McAvennie has been impressed by Starfelt's start to life at Parkhead and claims he will continue to be a handful for opposing attackers.

"The boy Starfelt looks a player," McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

"I think he's going to be a handful. He's been screaming at some of the other defenders, that's top class.

"Especially against Hearts, he was so loud. I love that. He was telling Ralston to stop the crosses coming in.

"It's a simple thing but someone needs to say it. Sometimes that's what you need in there.

"But once again, why wasn't he in much sooner? That's the overarching issue.

"But Starfelt looks like a good bit of business at least."

Celtic take a 4-2 lead into next week's Europa League clash with Czech side Jablonec.

Goals from Liel Abada, Kyogo Furuhashi, Ryan Christie and James Forrest saw the Hoops over the line on Thursday.
