Michael Keane reacts as James Rodriguez sends 'unforgettable' Everton message

James Rodriguez is the latest former Everton player to pay tribute after their farewell match at Goodison Park.

David Moyes' side coasted to a 2-0 victory over Southampton on Sunday as Everton said goodbye to the Grand Old Lady, as they prepare for their summer move across Liverpool to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees had Iliman Ndiaye to thank for a well-taken pair of first-half goals at Goodison Park to put the result beyond doubt straight away, as he scored inside six minutes and doubled the lead in added time.

A sea of blue on all four sides of the stadium included several former players in attendance at Everton's long-time home of 133 years, which will continue to host Everton Women's matches from next season.

The outpour of love for Goodison has only increased since Gladwys Street closed its doors to Premier League games for the last time, and numerous Everton players penned emotional tributes to the stadium.

Former Evertonians have also paid tribute, such as Tottenham striker Richarlison who is linked with a return to the club this summer, and another South American who became a fan favourite at Goodison.

James Rodriguez only plied his trade in royal blue for a single season in 2020–21 before a fall-out with then-manager Rafa Benitez led to his exit, but posted on Instagram (19 May) to express his gratitude.

In a post liked by current Toffees defender Michael Keane, Rodriguez said: "Thank you, Evertonians, for all the love and support. Playing at Goodison Park was unforgettable. Once a Blue, always a Blue!"

A return for Richarlison has been shut down by Moyes in recent weeks and Rodriguez is unlikely to be seen on Merseyside again, while Football Insider revealed last month that Keane will "definitely" leave Everton upon the expiry of his contract.

The unfortunate irony of Rodriguez's time at Everton is the fact that his sole campaign came largely behind closed doors, as the 2020–21 season was the most heavily affected by the covid-19 lockdowns.

Goodison's largest attendance to watch Rodriguez in the flesh was a mere 6,068 in one of just three matches to host fans that season, but the Colombian has clearly maintained an affection for Everton supporters.
