Newcastle United fans were delighted after Fabian Schar sent Jordan Pickford the wrong way during Switzerland's penalty shoot-out defeat to England.

Pickford is a pantomime villain at St James' Park due to his Sunderland origins, with the ill feelings towards him growing stronger during his time at Everton.

As England won 5-3 on penalties to progress to the European Championships semi-finals, fans revelled in the fact the Newcastle defender had beaten Pickford from the spot.

Schar stepped up and rolled his penalty into the keeper's bottom left, while the England shot-stopper dived to his right, much to the delight of the Toon Army.

This came despite images showing Pickford's penalty instructions written on his water bottle reading "Schar - fake left, dive right" to which he did the opposite.

Newcastle fans pointed to their player having scored past Pickford as a victory over Sunderland, with many taking to social media to gloat.

Many insisted they just wanted to see their player find the net, regardless of the possible repercussions for England, with one insisting it was the "best part" of the game.

However, Pickford was the target of the majority of social media reactions.
