Newcastle put up a spirited performance against Tottenham at Wembley on Wednesday night, despite a 1-0 loss, and fans flocked onto Twitter to rave about the display of Jonjo Shelvey.

The 26-year-old midfielder put on a masterclass for the visiting fans and was hugely unlucky not to give his side the lead in the first half when he slammed a free kick against the woodwork.

With Newcastle's Premier League status already secured for another season, the game was far from a dead rubber, with Tottenham needing victory to cement their top-four spot.

They got that after Harry Kane fired the home side into the lead in the 50th minute.

Newcastle had no answer and their season is petering out now, with last night's result making it four losses in a row for Benitez's men.

However, the away fans took heart from another masterclass from Shelvey, and they think he's done enough to get himself on the plane to Russia for the World Cup finals.
