Newcastle United left-back Paul Dummett has waved goodbye to Sunderland after the Wearside club's relegation to League One was confirmed on Saturday.

The Black Cats lost 2-1 to fellow strugglers Burton at the Stadium of Light, meaning that it is impossible for them to claw their way out of the Championship's bottom three.

Newcastle fans understandably reveled in their rivals' downfall and Dummett, 26, was among those to rub salt in Sunderland's wounds with his tweet about their relegation on his personal Twitter account.

Dummett has been in top form for Newcastle this season, appearing 17 times in all competitions after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

Football Insider verdict

Dummett has already become a favourite among fans this season for his impressive form, and he will have done even more to get them raving about him with this dig at Sunderland. It's a sorry state of affairs at the Stadium of Light, but they will surely be able to bounce back next season if they get rid of most of the playing squad and replace them with some shrewd signings. Newcastle on the other hand look like the only place they're going is up and up under Rafa Benitez. It might be a very long time before another North-East derby, unless the FA and League Cups can throw up a showdown.
