Newcastle United have been urged not to try and sign former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes it would be a “massive ask” for Ramos to get up to speed in the Premier League.

The Magpies have been surprisingly linked with a move for the 38-year-old free agent as the club looks to improve their defensive options.

According to a report by Fichajes, the Premier League giants are willing to offer Ramos a deal worth £8.3million over an 18-month period.

Eddie Howe has been attempting to sign a central defender since the summer when the club pursued Marc Guehi, and the desire to strengthen this area of his team hasn’t gone away.

Sergio Ramos would struggle to get up to pace for Newcastle United

“You can see him signing him in January, taking a month to get fit,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“He starts playing [in] February, end of February, gets sent off at the end of February, misses the next four matches, and you pay him an absolute fortune for six weeks-worth of games.

“The Premier League is so quick.

“Listen, Sergio Ramos has been one of the best defenders in the world for a number of years.

“But to come into the Premier League and to immediately start playing, it's a massive ask because of the way that the game is.

“The speed of the game, you'd need a lot of protection on either side of him.”
