Newcastle United have joined Celtic and West Ham in the race to sign Brighton defender Shane Duffy this summer, Football Insider understands.

Steve Bruce is in the market for a senior centre-back and has set his sights on landing the Seagulls centre-back.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Duffy, 28, is a top target due to his international and Premier League experience and availability in the current window.

Brighton have given the green light for the Republic of Ireland international to go out on an initial loan.

Both Celtic and West Ham are looking at taking Duffy on a temporary deal due to their restricted finances.

Hoops manager Neil Lennon admitted yesterday his club have made "tentative enquiries" over a deal for the defender.

West Ham have shortlisted Duffy as one of three centre-back targets along with Man City's John Stones and Man United's Phil Jones.

He has played 33 times for his country as well as 96 times in the Premier League and in 132 Championship matches.

Duffy has slipped down the pecking order at Brighton, where Lewis Dunk and Adam Webster have emerged as the first choice pairing.

Dunk signed a new five-year contract yesterday while Graham Potter hopes to also be able to call upon Ben White in the new season and Dan Burn is also on the Seagulls' books.
